Two of the Goleta Valley Historical Society cannons will be on display tomorrow at the El Presidio de Santa Barbara. The Veterans Day Ceremony will be hosted by the Santa Barbara Trust For Historic Preservation and Fort Tejon State Historic Park Soldiers.
In 1981 after a strong storm washed away much of the sand from the beaches, a jogger discovered five cannon near Goleta Beach. The cannons underwent an extensive restoration process conducted by archaeologists from UC Santa Barbara.
The cannons are believed to have been built in the late 18th century, based on markings on the cannon as well as metallurgy testing done by Dr. Madden of the University of Pennsylvania. Two of the cannons, Cannon B and Cannon E, are marked with a letter “H.” This was the symbol used by the founder Harrison, of Robertsbridge, Sussex, England. If Harrison was the manufacturer, the cannons were made before 1746. Based on other markings made on the cannons’ trunnions, it is believed that they were built in England or Scotland.

On January 25, 2009, the Goleta Valley Historical Society honored Joan Rakowski “Volunteer of the Year.” “Joan has done tremendous work for our organization,” says Robin Cederlof, GVHS President, who will present the award.
Joan Rakowski has been a dedicated volunteer for the past 16 years. When asked how her volunteer career at Rancho La Patera & Stow House began, Joan pointed out “I always said I would volunteer as soon as I retire.” And that is just what she did. Joan retired after 25 years as a Special Education teacher for the Goleta School District and quickly began her work on behalf of the Society. When asked how she became interested in helping out Joan said “I would bring my own family to events such as the 4Th of July and it seemed like a great group of people.”
This is the first time the Goleta Valley Historical Society has given the honor. The community of members, volunteers and staff were very pleased with the news that Joan would be honored. Linda Foster, Volunteer Coordinator and Rancho La Patera Caretaker of 20 years says, “When I think of Joan Rakowski, the word that comes to mind is generosity. Over the years I’ve watched how she cares for her children and grandchildren, supports her community of faith, and pours herself out here at GVHS.”
Music at the Ranch Free Concert Series continues this Tuesday, August 12TH at 5:30. The lively Henderson Brothers will entertain the crowd with their unique jazz and blues sound.
Bring a picnic. Wine and beverages are available for sale at the event.
